SF YouthWorks Goes Above & Beyond

In February Employment Coordinator’s Liora and Linda will kick-off the first ever SF YouthWorks “Girls Group.” The group brings together young women to support one another’s career and educational goals through monthly workshops. The Girls Group began with the idea to support teen mothers navigate through the maze of parenthood – which they often times face alone.

Girls will be paid for workshops covering topics ranging from employment rights to women’s health.  We will also offer drop in hours each week for girls to receive one on one support.

Although teen moms are the focus of this group, all high school girls are welcome to participate in monthly activities and workshops covering topics ranging from employment rights to women’s health. The Girls Group will also host drop in hours each week for participants to receive one on one support.

The Girls Group has recently become a member of the Alliance for Girls, a membership-based coalition that brings together organizations throughout the Bay Area who are committed to improving the lives of local girls.

When asked why they committed to starting this group in addition to their already hectic schedules, Linda stated, “I know the struggles of being a mother.” Linda explained, “l’d like to help young women see their potential and teach them to access resources available to their professional and personal development.”

Liora was moved by the challenges pregnant teens were facing in the workplace as well as their motivation to work. “I wanted to continue to engage these girls with the program –  I want them to continue to see themselves as capable young women, and develop their career goals.”
